Villa, “happy to help with goals and assists”

Villa, “happy to help with goals and assists”

Barça’s Spanish striker has had a great week, with goals against Milan and Rayo and he wants to “carry on like that!”

“The group is really happy after these last two results, especially last Tuesday’s”
“Physically, I’m at my best – I’ve got over all those little problems that were bothering me and I’m happy to be feeling fine again”.

David Villa was one of the stars of the game against Rayo, scoring the first goal and then setting up Leo Messi for the next two. Speaking on the Barça TV programme “El Marcador”, he explained: “I’m happy to help the team with goals and assists. I don’t normally set up that many goals and I really feel valuable having done so in these last couple of matches. I’m very pleased with how I did this week and now I just want to make sure I carry on like that and help the team to get to the end of the league and the Champions League final”.

Two wins have boosted morale

Villa revealed that the result against Milan had given the squad a great boost: “we knew we could do it, but we knew the first leg result was a bad one and we would need to be at our best. We showed on the pitch all the work we had been doing and between us we carried it off. The lads are happy with these two good results, especially Tuesday’s but also tonight’s after all the effort we had put in and against a team who were very demanding”.

Back to full fitness

After starting both the last two matches, Villa admitted he was feeling good: “physically, I’m at my best – I’ve got over all those little problems that were bothering me and I’m happy to be feeling fine again. I’ve been working hard for quite a while to overcome my difficulties and I’m pleased to get to this stage of the season scoring goals and getting plenty of game time”.
Villa is also ready to play where he’s needed – out on the left or through the centre: “I’ve shown for Barça and for Spain that I can play out wide and I’m happy to play in either position, but the nearer I am to the box, the easier it is for me, as I’ve always been a number 9”.

Barcelona player Sergio Busquets believes Barcelona have gotten the confidence needed to bounce back

Busquets feels FCB got what they needed

After a fantastic personal display against AC Milan, Sergio Busquets has spoken about what the result means for the team’s spirits
Sergio Busquets was one of the big stars of the spectacular result against Milan last night. He was the balancing factor in a team that went all out from the start in search of the goals they needed. Andoni Zubizarreta described the midfielder’s performance as something that all the youngsters at la Masia need to study hard and use as a yardstick. But Busquets himself is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “I just try to do my job well because I know about the repercussions of playing for Barça” he modestly said. “But I am happy with the way things went both personally and as a team, and that’s important”.
Dream night
Busquets has played in the first team since 2008, so he’s had plenty of glory nights at the Camp Nou, but the Milan game last night was something completely new. “It was one of the best games I’ve experienced. It was the day and the match that we needed”, he said. “We have been unlucky when seeking other comebacks. I have always thought that those are the greatest things and now we can say that we got one too. I am so proud to have been part of one of the great comebacks”.
“It was good that we had a full week to prepare, the fans were immense before the match and the team was quite aware of that. There was a little bit of everything and things worked out to perfection … It was a great game, very complete, except for the end, when Milan came close”.
Learning and improving
But rather than jump any guns, Busquets feels it is still important to remember what happened in the first leg. “All Champions League games are difficult from scratch. The San Siro taught us that there are no favourites, that if we don’t do our very best, anybody can beat us and we can suffer … Everything is positive though, it’s about learning and improving.”
“We didn’t do it because we wanted to silence the critics, we did it for ourselves. We’re professionals and we like that. Most of us are locals and so it’s especially intense for us. You have a bad time when you lose, so these days have done a lot of good for our confidence … But neither did people need to take the situation quite as seriously as they did. All teams have drops in form”.

The Barça midfielder says that "we achieved our objective" and he adds "when there's that kind of unity between the team and the fans, matches like this are won easily
David Villa and Jordi Alba passes anti-doping tests after the match against Milan.
“We achieved our objective. To date it was one of the most complete games we’ve played. Hopefully this experience will help us in the future,” said Andrés Iniesta after this evening’s 4-0 victory over AC Milan. The midfielder added: “the team played brilliantly. When you have that kind of unity between the team and the fans games can be very long for our rivals at the Camp Nou.”

The comeback was a necessity

The Spanish footballer explained that the fightback was an absolute necessity after the result from the away leg: “we had an obligation to try and fight back and that’s what we did. The feelings we transmitted on the pitch were fantastic. When we show our identity, we’re very hard to beat.” He added: “at times things do go the way you had hoped. The season is very long and there’s time for everything. This Tuesday we had to be at 110%.”

General satisfaction

Each and every Barça player agreed that they had been superior to Milan, that the atmosphere at the stadium was simply magical and, most importantly, the team regained its essence.

Here are the statements made by some of the FC Barcelona players after the match:

DAVID VILLA

“We came out flying from the very beginning. We looked for our first goal from the starting whistle. We believed we could turn the tie around, and with that attitude a lot can be accomplished.”

“We’re very pleased for the fans. They have always believed in us and they haven’t criticised us along the way. This was for them.”

“Our joy is overwhelming. We need to enjoy this. I really don’t care who we face in the quarter-finals.”

JORDI ALBA

“This is a very important victory for us, so much was at stake. We suffered a lot in the final minutes of the game. Milan were looking for a goal.”

“We were great going forward and on defence. We saw the real FC Barcelona. They had a clear chance, Niang’s. Luckily, my goal was important.”

GERARD PIQUÉ

“We were lucky enough to score early and that helped us. We were superior to Milan from the start and we’re good enough to score goals.”

“The atmosphere was fantastic. The fans knew what we needed and we played well.”

DANI ALVES

“I think that, once again, the members and the fans left the stadium with a sense of pride. We aren’t the team that lost to Milan. We’re the team that won this evening. We pressured, created chances, etc.”

“This is the team’s identity. We know how to control the rhythm of the game. In this magical night we defeated a great rival. The response from this team in decisive matches is usually very good.”

#football updates# withnessing the impossible by Barcelona

WITHNESSING THE IMPOSSIBLE BY BARCELONA
Witnessing the impossible
Lionel Messi was lying down on the pitch looking up to the sky with his arms raised. Jordi Alba was kissing the club badge on his shirt. David Villa was sliding on his knees screaming of happiness. In the stands B team players Sergi Roberto and Marc Muniesa were going mad with their Barça scarfs and flags. So was the rest of the Camp Nou. Kids, grandparents, everyone was jumping, screaming, singing, raising their hands to their heads, wondering: did that just happen?
The weeks and days leading up to the game created an ever stronger feeling that this would be impossible. Since Tito Vilanova was forced to leave the squad for cancer treatment in New York, not much has been the same at FC Barcelona. The team who for the first half of the season were unbeaten had lost four times since Tito left. Heads were down and the team was not only missing its leader but was also negatively affected by not knowing if the coach would be alright. The motivation for football had seemed to be blown away, titles had become meaningless. It felt like a cloud of depression had been hanging over Barcelona lately.
There were few reasons to believe this team would bounce back and turn around the 2-0 loss they faced in Milano. Actually no team in the history of the Champions League had ever turned around such a result before. AC Milan came to Camp Nou with confidence and in their best form of the season. Barça came out to the game after losing twice to Real Madrid and looking unmotivated to play football.
But as I stepped into the Camp Nou, something suddenly changed. The feeling that “this is impossible, there is nothing to be done to be able to fulfill this remuntada” disappeared. It was like the club, the fans and the team had just decided, what the hell – let’s believe we can make this happen. Despite what everything else indicates. Outside Camp Nou there were two big signs with the words “ROAD TO WEMBLEY”. Suddenly the feeling was everywhere, this could be done, this would be done.

A few minutes into the game, an old Catalan man next to me looked me in the eye and said with confidence: “We will score now!”. One minute later Lionel Messi had made it 1-0 and the Camp Nou exploded. After that there was never any doubt, Camp Nou gave the impression that something extraordinary was on the horizon.
What before had felt so impossible now felt like the most obvious outcome. I remember sitting there, with the result still only 1-0 feeling that it would end 4-0, we would make it happen. But one mistake could still see it all gone. Mascherano made that mistake and suddenly M’Baye Niang was one on one with Victor Valdés. As the ball went past Victor it was like everything became slow-motion. Camp Nou was holding its breath. When the ball finally hit the post, the 98,000 at the Camp Nou started to breath again. We were still in the game, it was our game.
Messi made it 2-0 and the elder Catalan men around me screamed in happiness before joining the rest of the stadium in chants of “MESSI, MESSI, MESSI”, bowing for Barcelona’s own deity. But the celebrations would get a lot wilder when David Villa made it 3-0 in the second half. The impossible had been made reality. Camp Nou exploded after it and people all around me were going mad. Scarfs were waved in the air, everyone were singing. But at the same time they all knew that one goal from AC Milan would drag them out of that wonderful dream and throw them under the bus.
With ten minutes left on the clock, Milan had more and more of the ball and the Camp Nou crowd was starting to get nervous for the first time all night. “I’m nervous” were the words coming every five seconds out of my Catalan neighbor at the stadium. So was everyone. Then he came, running, running and running. It was Jordi Alba and he was there to complete one of the most magical nights at Camp Nou. 4-0 and there was nothing holding them back anymore. The impossible had happened and hugs were given out to any and everyone. A happiness unlike anything I had witnessed before was spreading around the Camp Nou. The woman in front of me would not stop jumping and clapping her hands until the game had finished. In fact no one would sit down again, no one would stop clapping, singing, screaming. It was just joy.
Leaving the stadium, all that crossed my mind was – I was there, I will forever be able to tell people that I was there when FC Barcelona fulfilled one of the most insane comebacks in football history. I was at Camp Nou the night Barcelona beat AC Milan 4-0.
IMG_210n2
In the end it was just the first knock out stage and Barça are not yet anywhere near being crowned European champions. But it was something more than getting through to the quarterfinals. It was the way it was done, how the critics were silenced, how the team managed to lift their heads and go out to win, to win for Tito.

Player Reactions: Real Madrid CF 2-1 FC Barcelona

Player Reactions: Real Madrid CF 2-1 FC Barcelona
After the jump, read the reactions of a few FC Barcelona players, Jordi Roura, and Andoni Zubizarreta to Saturday afternoon’s defeat to Real Madrid.

Jordi Alba

On the match itself Alba felt that a draw would have been a fair result, but correctly pointed out that Barça is suffering from “set pieces and long balls“.  He did however point out that the club still has “a good advantage over Atlético and Real Madrid.” He stressed that the team “needs to leave this behind and focus on the match against Deportivo and Milan,” recognizing that improvement is necessary, saying, “we have to give it our all and even more so against Milan. We have confidence in ourselves.
He was asked about the gesture he made to the crowd after Messi’s goal. It was not a middle finger to the Madrid fans but rather a use of his index finger “to show that Messi is the best in the world and that he deserves the praise.

Gerard Piqué

After one of his better performances in a while, with multiple excellent tackles and blocks, Piqué was both astute and honest in his analysis. While he said they improved from the Tuesday defeat, he was clear that the team “has to give a lot more.” He continued by noting: “we weren’t fluid like we usually are and we’re missing certain things. We’ve had these bad moments when we won a lot of titles, but we have to end this poor streak as soon as possible … I don’t think it’s the right moment to criticize our style of play, we’ve secured a lot of good results with it.”
Despite being clearly disappointed and frustrated and refusing to use the referee as an excuse, he injected some optimism in his comments by saying that the team is “confident that [they'll] eliminate Milan.”

Jordi Roura

Roura came out with the same themes he has used after all the other recent defeats. He called the match “complicated” and praised the team for “working hard” and their “attitude“.  However he acknowledged that “the result is what counts“.
Despite the intense recent schedule, Roura refuted any claims it’s a fatigue issue, saying that “I don’t think we have a physical problem. Despite the result, we had our chances to win points.
He talked about the intention to control the match because “Real Madrid’s style is to take advantage of errors,” yet refused to mention the complete lack of penetration or even attempt to penetrate during the 2nd half.
Lastly, while not as dismissive about the obvious penalty as Piqué, he said, “the images are sufficiently clear and eloquent.”

Andoni Zubizarreta

Despite the way the 2nd half played out, Zubizarreta said that they “were not looking for the draw” and that the “intent is always to win.” But he also marginalized the effect of the result on the league as a whole, saying that “in a competition you sometimes win and sometimes your competitors do,” but that “the Liga is very long and we’ll try to overcome these circumstances.
He commended Valdés for his “exceptional” game and said that the team struggled to link up with Messi.
On the non-call he said “the images are clear“, but finished with “we’re a club that is used to difficult moments, but we never give up. We always compete, that’s our history.”

my life my football story

FOOTBALL as my topic to write on

Here's a look back at the crucial moments in Leo Messi's careers at FC Barcelona. The Argentine just extended his contract with the Club through 2018
Leo Messi, who renewed his contract through 2018, is 25 years old and he’s been with Barça for 13 years. Here's an overview of the 13 key moments in the world’s best player’s career:

- Official debut with the first team (October 16, 2004): Messi’s first match for the senior side was in La Liga in the Catalan derby played at Montjuïc. He was subbed in for Deco.

- His first goal in La Liga (May 1, 2005): Against Albacete, at the Camp Nou, Messi received an assist from Ronaldinho, the Argentine then chipped Valbuena to seal Barça’s 2-0 victory. That year Barça went on to win the first Liga title of the Rijkaard era.

- The Joan Gamper Trophy against Juventus (August 24, 2005): Even though Messi had already shown what he was capable of, his breakout match was against Capello’s Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy. The Argentine was simply unstoppable.

- 19-year-old Messi nets hat trick against Real Madrid (March 10, 2007): His first hat trick with the first team was against Real Madrid in the Clásico at the Camp Nou. His third goal came in the last minute of the match, his three goals secured a point for his team, who were down a man.

- Maradona-like goal against Getafe (April 18, 2007): In the semi-finals of the Cup, Messi scored a goal for the history books: he received the ball in the center of the pitch and left every defender, plus the keeper, in his wake before he fired to the back of the net. The goal is nearly identical to the one Maradona scored in the 1986 World Cup against England.

- Treble in Rome (May 27, 2009): The Argentine scored a header against Manchester United in Rome and secured the Champions League title for FC Barcelona and, at the same time, secured the Club's first ever treble: Cup, League, Champions League.

- First Ballon d’Or (December 1, 2009): After finishing third in 2007 and second in 2008, France Football named Leo Messi the best footballer of the year in 2009.

- Match-winning goal scored with his ‘heart’; Club World Cup title (December 1, 2009): Barça went on to win the only title that hadn’t graced the Catalan Club’s trophy cabinet in December of 2009. In Abu Dhabi, Barça defeated Estudiantes de La Plata in overtime thanks to a goal scored by Leo Messi. Barça went on to lift its sixth trophy in a year after the game, that team is affectionately known as the Barça of the Six Cups.

-Decisive goal in Wembley (May 28, 2011): The final of the Champions League against Manchester United was one of the most brilliant of the Pep Guardiola era. Messi scored the go-ahead goal (2-1) in the second half and the Blaugrana would go on to win the title (3-1).

- Highest goalscorer in the history of the Club (March 20, 2012): Against Granada, at the Camp Nou, Leo Messi became the highest goalscorer in the history of the Club in official matches. He broke the previous record of 232 goals set by César Rodríguez.

- 50 goals in La Liga in one season and second Golden Boot Award (May 12, 2012): The 2011/12 season ends with a jaw-dropping 50-goal tally for Messi. The Argentine, thanks to his 50 goals in the domestic competition, wins his second Golden Boot Award.

- Messi breaks Müller’s record (December 22, 2012): The Argentine scored 91 goals in 2012 and smashes Gerd Müller’s record of 85 goals scored in a calendar year (1972).

- Fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or (January 7, 2013): Messi becomes the first footballer ever to win the Ballon d’Or four times. In addition, all four awards were won consecutively.
