Éric Abidal's farewell in 10 comments

The Frenchman, who was accompanied by the whole team, bid farewell to FC Barcelona this morning
Éric Abidal said goodbye to FC Bacelona this Thursday morning. During his emotional press conference, the Frenchman addressed his team-mates, the technical staff and the fans and he thanked them for their support. Here’s a selection of what we believe to be the best comments from today’s press conference:

1) “It’s quite a difficult day I have played here for six years, and I’ve been lucky to have marvelous team-mates, the best in the world. I’ve learned a lot from them.”

2) “Thanks to the players and the managers. The doctors and the physios, who have helped me through difficult moments. To doctor Medina, who has helped me for years. And thanks to my family.”

3) “When I got sick I had to objectives. The first was to fight for my family, so I could see my daughters grow up. The second was to play again. I would have liked to continue on here, but the Club doesn’t agree and I respect their decision.”

4) “I’m leaving but I’ll definitely be back, because I have a very interesting offer from the Club which I have to think over. Thank you for the gesture”

5) “A big thanks to all the fans for supporting me. I will always remember the fans.”

6) “My future? I currently need to finish my contract with Barça. I haven’t been made any offers and I have time to think about it. What’s important is the final match of the season.”

7) “It’s difficult to leave football, it changes your life.”

8) “I want to continue playing football because I’m healthy. If the doctors tell me that I’m risking my life, I’ll leave the sport, but that’s not the case at the moment.”

9) “I fought. It was my personal Champions League. It was a group victory, because my team-mates cheered me on and encouraged me. Thank you all, I couldn’t have fought by myself.”

10) “[What will I remember?] My first match with the Club, the day the doctors found the tumour, my return to the Camp Nou, the gesture of the team captains at Wembley, and especially, today.”

Devil’s Advocate: Has Barcelona taken advantage of Éric Abidal?

Devil’s Advocate: Has Barcelona taken advantage of Éric Abidal?
Emotions are running high after FC Barcelona officially announced the departure of talismanic French defender Éric Abidal. This decision has divided culé opinion around the world with some fans vigorously condemning the move while others are equally passionate about this being the best course of action for all involved.

The pragmatists argue that Abidal is a financial and sporting risk that the club cannot afford to take. The club has stood by the player during his long recovery and through one protracted relapse. The player is almost 34 and the likelihood of recovering the form that made him such a good fit for the team is low. The timing of this decision is designed to give the player the most time possible to entertain deals from other clubs. There is an open offer for a non-sporting position at the club that Abidal can accept even if he leaves to play with another squad next season.

The emotionalists think that Abidal deserves more of a chance to prove himself, now that he is presumably able to play again. The club made the player this promise earlier in the Spring, and should make policy like a family rather than a corporation. The club has cynically taken advantage of the emotion around Abidal’s recovery only to close the door in his face. Is Abidal really any less physically fit than Puyol? What effect will this move have on the morale of other players like Puyol or Xavi, who are also approaching the end of their careers, or even Tito Vilanova himself?
Your turn: has Barcelona taken advantage of Eric Abidal?

Valdés: “I owe everything to Barça”

The goalkeeper has thanked the club for everything it has done for him in two decades and has explained why he has decided to leave when his contract expires in 2014
Víctor Valdés has given a press conference on Friday morning in the Ricard Maxenchs pressroom to explain why he will not be renewing his contract with Barça. The goalkeeper says he is eternally grateful to the club and fans but admits to a certain tiredness after so long. Specifically, what he said was:
The goalkeeping position at this club is a very heavy role and I have been feeling that responsibility from a young age
“I have been at this home of mine for twenty years, ten at the Masia and twelve in the first team. I have been lucky enough to share a dressing room with the best players in the world and to win all these titles. Barça has given me everything. That says it all. Me and my family. But the goalkeeping position at this club is a very heavy role and I have been feeling that responsibility from a young age. It is a decision that has been maturing for some time and little by little you get worn out. I think my footballing cycle will end when my contact runs out, in other words, next year, and I told the club that when they contacted me to talk about my renewal. I didn’t want people to speculate about my professionalism and my love for the colours. I am grateful for the offer, but the decision is irrevocable”.
The goalkeeper said that he announced his decision in January because that was when he definitively made his mind up. “To avoid speculations, I felt obliged to make the announcement personally. The club thought differently. I know that some people might feel let down and I beg forgiveness, that wasn’t my intention. I have faced up to the fans, I have been sincere and transparent”.

Open to the best solution

As for his immediate future, Valdés spoke frankly. “My cycle ends when my contract terminates and the fact is I still have a year left on it … I am open to finding the best solution so that Barça and myself both come out winning … I will defend this shirt and this badge to the death until the very last day”.
Not in 50 lives would I experience again what I have got from Barça. I feel very highly valued
He also spoke about his colleagues. “I give thanks to my team-mates and the people that have supported me all these years and especially in these months of silence that have been so tough for me”. And he extended his words to everybody else at the club. “Not in 50 lives would I experience again what I have got from Barça. I feel very highly valued. All of the directors have put their faith in me, the group and the philosophy. I have felt very appreciated”.

Special night in Paris

Asked about his fondest memories, Valdés said “I’ll keep the experience in the dressing room and the most special night of all, Paris 2006 … The worst? The defeats, illnesses, saying goodbye to people and the moments of disappointment shared in intimacy with my team-mates.”
He was joined by the three other captains, Puyol, Xavi and Iniesta, and finished by saying what he thinks the most important aspects are when it comes to playing in goal for Barça: “A Barça keeper has to be the best in the world at one on one. And also has to be able to play with his feet, as they always say, that’s the most important thing”.

The disregarded youth

The disregarded youth
FC Barcelona is known to be a club that trusts its youth products and often gives them chances. We are all familiar with the stories of Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, and many other La Masia graduates who were introduced into the first team at a young age and ended up making a successful career in Catalonia. However, especially this season, it almost seems as if Barça doesn’t believe in its academy anymore, or at least, is far less eager to give the youth products chances on the pitch.
Many have wanted to see a lot more of Thiago this season, myself included. Questions have also been raised about the policy over Martín Montoya, Cristian Tello, and Marc Bartra; if they are as talented as their few performances indicate, what is stopping Barcelona from giving them more chances? These four men are perhaps the most radical examples of talented youth products that have been more or less snubbed this season.
The reason for the policy regarding these youngsters is something we don’t know for certain and we are only left with the option of speculating. Perhaps Tito has been afraid of losing points in the Liga and giving arch rivals Real Madrid any hope. Perhaps he wants to end the season with 100 points in La Liga, just to show that Barça is still among the very elite. We can question the rightfulness of these ideas, but even if we support them, things still don’t fully make sense.
If you look at the quality of players like Thiago, Tello, Montoya, and Bartra, you can only wonder why they haven’t been trusted with the job of winning Barça those important points. These players possess all the qualities a Barça player needs, and even more importantly, they haven’t failed to impress when given a chance, although they have still made mistakes, as one would expect from a young player. Still, if these youngsters were judged by their performances alone, they should have played a lot more. In fact, there have been times when – for example – Tello has been in better form than David Villa or Pedro, and yet the youngster has found himself on the bench. There have also been times when Xavi or Dani Alves have looked incredibly tired, and yet Thiago and Montoya – who might well have been in better form – have been keeping Tello company on the bench. The same goes for Bartra. It was only when both Puyol and Mascherano were injured that Bartra got a chance in the starting lineup. If it takes a defense torn by injuries to even give Bartra a chance, something must be wrong.
Tello and Montoya in the Camp Nou tunnel
What is even more baffling is that players like Thiago, Tello, Bartra, and Montoya might be exactly what Barcelona needs at this moment. When we lacked tempo and creativity against Bayern Munich, perhaps Thiago could have done a better job than the exhausted Xavi. When Dani Alves was playing an incredibly high number of minutes and didn’t look completely fresh, perhaps Montoya could have taken his spot and done a better job than the Brazilian. When Barça’s defense was torn apart by injuries, or even before that, perhaps Bartra should have been given more chances, and perhaps that way he’d have been more ready to face a team like Bayern Munich. When Barcelona’s attack looked static and Messi-dependent, perhaps Tello and his incredible pace could have been the solution. Now, instead of looking at what we already have, we’re looking for solutions from the transfer market.
It’s obvious that Barcelona needs a center back this summer, and it’s also obvious that the club will look to strengthen its attack, as the signing of Neymar indicates. With the way things are right now, I consider these purchases more or less necessary. However, had we acted differently earlier, these signings might not have been necessary at all. And not to mention, we might have saved a penny or two as well. At this point, one can only wonder why Barcelona has made the situation so hard for itself, why has the club let itself slip into a situation where it needs to sign new players with big money, when at the same time, we have these young talents waiting for their turn?
Perhaps it’s not a moment to panic just yet. We know that Xavi had to wait for his turn, Iniesta had to wait for his turn, and they ended up alright, to say the least. We also know that the youngsters shouldn’t be rushed, introducing them to the pressure early on could destroy their confidence like it eventually did to Bojan, for example. Of course the pressure could help them to advance as well, like it did for the 19-year-old Leo Messi, but perhaps it’s a bit unrealistic to expect that the same would happen to everyone, regardless of the talent.
Bartra-Barca-Celtic-Jeff-J-Mitchell-Getty-Images
However, with the talent and potential players like Thiago, Tello, Montoya, and Bartra have shown, it’s quite obvious that they have what it takes to succeed. But as we all know, talent alone is nothing unless you’re willing to develop and polish it. Right now, Barcelona seems frustratingly hesitant to do that, and instead, chooses to spend big money on players whose talent has already been polished. Where would we be now if the club had been this hesitant with Xavi, Iniesta, or Messi? Would they be what they are today? We can only wonder.
If the club continues to act like this, we will either lose these talents to other clubs that are willing to give them the chances they deserve, or their potential will continue to go to waste on the bench. With both of these options equally bad, Barcelona must change something in order to make the most of the talents it has.

Ex-Barça: Ludovic Giuly retires

Ex-Barça: Ludovic Giuly retires

Former Barça man Ludovic Giuly (36) announced his retirement form professional football after 19 years playing at the highest level. Giuly arrived at the club in 2004 along with several other big name recruits like Deco and Samuel Eto’o. More after the jump.

Giuly played for Barça over three seasons notching up 122 official appearances and scoring 20 goals along the way. No goal was as important as during the 2005/6 Champions League season in which his sole effort over the 180 minutes against AC Milan pushed FC Barcelona into the final versus Arsenal. He scored that night in Paris too, following up as Eto’o was tripped by Jens Lehmann but the goal was disallowed. Over his Barça career he won one Champions League, two Spanish league titles and two Spanish Super Cups.
Since then Giuly has been at Roma, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Monaco, and most recently Lorient. His final game was two days back (May 26, 2013) versus PSG in which he was taken off to receive the applause of the crowd and handed a commemorative shirt by the capital club.

Andrés Iniesta, in a ‘hangout’ with Pato: “Playing in Brazil is magic”

Iniesta took part in a hangout with Google + with Pato to talk about the Confederations Cup to be held this summer in Brazil

The Barça midfielder spoke about his goals against Chelsea in 2009 and in eth 2010 World Cup Final

“Stamford Bridge and the World Cup Final will stay with me forever”

Iniesta’s goals at Stamford Bridge in the 2009 Champions League semi final and his winner for Spain in the following year’s World Cup final are two of the outstanding moments in the Barça man’s career and he commented: “having the chance to score goals like that is unique. They will stay with me forever. I am privileged to make so many people happy”. Pato reckoned he’d work as hard as he could: “”to score a goal as important as Iniesta’s were”.
To mark this summer’s Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup – both set to be held in Brazil – Iniesta participated in a hangout on the Google + page together with the Corinthians and Brazil striker Alexandre Pato. Journalists and fans also took part in the hangout. The two exchanged congratulations for Barça’s league title and Corinthians winning of the Campeonato Paulista. Iniesta described Pato as “ a really good player – I especially remember the great goal he scored against us when he was with Milan”, whilst Pato returned the compliment claiming: “playing against Iniesta is a pleasure, He is a magnificent player and a great champion. Barça are always very strong and I wish them many titles”.
Final we’d all like to see

Iniesta expressed his excitement at the possibility of facing the five times world champions:“for any player, to face Brazil at the Maracana is a unique, magic experience. It’ll be great and something special to face Pato, Neymar and the rest of the Brazilians”.

Alexandre Pato would also like to see a Spain-Brazil final: “it’d be an exciting final, which everyone would want to see!” Pato also explained the progress the Brazilian game has made over recent years: “it’s become more physical and better organised tactically than when I left for Europe and this development will help our national team”.

Messi: "I'm only focused on staying at FC Barcelona"

Leo Messi opens up about the difficulties Barça had to endure this season, while Andrés Iniesta
launches his Google+ page with a little help from former AC Milan player, Alexandre Pato
Leo Messi sat down with Televisión Azteca’s Inés Sainz last week to give his take on FC Barcelona’s 2012/13 season. “I was very happy to win La Liga,” starts Messi, “the Spanish league is a very important competition because of the rivals we had to go up against, like Real Madrid; they are one of the best teams in the world.”

Even though Barça took control of table from the first week of the competition, Messi says that the road that led the team to the title wasn’t an easy one to travel. “The truth is that this hasn’t been easy because we came into this season after a big change,” says the Argentinian in reference to Guardiola’s departure. He adds: “Things went well with Tito [Vilanova], because he practically didn’t change anything. But we noticed a change when he left, not because Roura or the training staff who stayed on didn’t do a good job but because we were missing our head manager ... It wasn’t the same. One year is a long time and it’s great that we can finish it by celebrating.”

The tough Champions League campaign, in addition to Éric Abidal and Tito Vilanova’s absence for large swaths of the year, certainly added to the burden the players had to carry throughout an otherwise successful season. “You can’t always win,” says Messi in reference to Barça's elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich. “We’ve been playing our brand of football for years and managers and teams have studied it. But we can’t lose our heads after what happened this season. We can’t change Barcelona’s style of play because that’s what has defined the team for years. We have to stay calm and focus on next year.”

When asked about his future plans, the Argentinian superstar declared, “I’m only focused on staying at Barcelona until the end. I’d like to play in Argentina one day, but I won’t play for another European team.”

Iniesta debuts Google+ page, features ‘hangout’ with Alexandre Pato

Andrés Iniesta unveiled his Google+ page this afternoon ahead of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which is set to kick off later this summer. The midfielder’s foray into Google’s social network platform started with a ‘Hangout’ with and Alexandre Pato, who plays for Brazil’s Corinthians, and Google+ users.

Piqué: “I give our season a high mark"

The Barça defender admits, “We’ve got used to the good times but winning a league is never easy”

According to Piqué: “This team’s got a lot more in it. We have to try and keep on winning and taking more trophies”
Gerard Piqué has taken a look back over the season for Barça TV. The defender was interviewed for ‘El Marcador’ following the win against Valladolid and the celebration of the league title with the fans. “The fans were looking forward to enjoying the league with us and once again they proved it by coming on a difficult day”. Piqué spoke about the moment Carles Puyol handed the trophy to Tito Vilanova and Éric Abidal. “It was a great gesture by Puyol. The captain always makes good and appropriate gestures. They both deserve it. But now we have to move on and focus on the future with enthusiasm and hope”.

Winning titles is very difficult and we’ve got used to the good times but winning a league is never easy
As for the season as a whole, Piqué has no doubts: “I give our season a high mark. We’ve got used to the good times. We’ve won a lot over the last few years and we and the coaching staff know that. Winning titles is very difficult and we’ve got used to the good times but winning a league is never easy”.

The 100-point challenge

Although the objective of winning the league has been achieved, the team still has challenge of reaching 100 points. “We’re attracted by it because in every match we have to go out to win, above all for the honour of the Club we represent. If we can get there, all the better. For us it’s a challenge. If we can reach 100 points, and beat the Club record (99), all the better”.
Reaching 100 points attracts us, above all for the honour of the Club we represent
The next hurdle in the race to 100 points is the match against Espanyol in the Cornellà-El Prat stadium. “It’s always special to go there because of the rivalry between the two teams and because of the stadium, where there’s always a great atmosphere”.

Barça 2013/14
Piqué believes that this group of players has a lot more to give. “This team’s got a lot more in it. We have to try and keep on winning and taking more trophies. There are some very young players in the squad who are keen to keep on winning. You can always improve. In the year of the treble, we signed four or five players to improve what we already had. If you don’t improve then you fall behind and we have to try and be the best. If you have to press more, do it. If you have to train harder, do it. If you have to try harder, do it. If you have to strengthen the team, the Club knows what has to be done”. And he’s not worried about the possible arrival of another centre half. “I welcome it. The more competition, the better for the team”.
But whatever happens, the team won’t be changing the way they play. “The Barça style isn't negotiable but we have to progress. Sometimes we play with Leo as a false striker with wingers. We have to change things around because our opponents get to know us and that mustn’t happen”.

Javier Mascherano: “We should to be satisfied with La Liga”

Javier Mascherano: "We should be satisfied with La Liga, it's not easy to win it”
Pleased with the league title

The center back went on to highlight the team’s triumphant league campaign despite the difficulties the year had in store for the Blaugrana. “The league title is what you hope to win from the start of the season. We ended up winning it, but our season could have been better, I’m sure, but I think we should be satisfied with what we’ve won,” he said. “The team has been very consistent, we’ve won a lot of points and that allowed us to win the league.”

Record celebration

“League titles need to be celebrated, you never know when you’re going to win one again. We need to celebrate and enjoy each title, now we need to close out the last two games of the season in the best way possible,” said Mascherano.

Lastly, the Argentinian went on to talk about the record of 100 points in La Liga. “We're two victories away from reaching the record, and the best way to end the season is by winning our next two games. However, we can’t obsess about the record, the objective was to win the league and that’s what we’ve done,” he said.

Pedro Rodríguez also talked to the press after the match:

“It’s good that we won, we wanted to win for our fans and give a good image of the team”

“We want to compete in these last two games of the season, and if we can win 100 points, even better”

“It was an important goal for me, and I dedicated it to Bryan (his son)”

Muniesa: “My future is uncertain”

Muniesa: “My future is uncertain”
Blaugrana centre-back Marc Muniesa (21), whose contract with FC Barcelona ends in June, declared that his future is still uncertain because the Club has yet to communicate anything to him with only one month left until the season ends.

The truth is that I know nothing. I’d love to continue, I’ve always said that. But here they’re telling me nothing. I’m still waiting. If [my career is] not here, it will be somewhere else. But my future is uncertain,” he explained.
Muniesa, born near Girona, joined the first team at the beginning of this season, but a rupture in the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee at the end of June in the pre-season against Hamburg left him off the pitch for seven months.

When he received the green light again in February, he accepted a spot with the B team, where he gained his best form again, though not knowing what would happen after June 30th of this year.
It is the decision of the people higher up, the coaches and directors. I always say I want to play here, it’s been my dream ever since I was a kid. And I will give it my all until the end to convince them,” Muniesa declared to EFE.

His situation has sparked the interest of many European clubs, such as Ajax: “They’re saying that, but I’m waiting for what they [Barça] decide. This is the press’s stuff. I am calm, I know I am good and can play many minutes anywhere. Going on loan? It would be good not to cut me off. It would mean that I’d still be part of Barça [in the future].”
It has been eleven years since Muniesa first came to La Masia, where he quickly became one of the more prominent players, playing in teams beyond his age group and praised for his maturity, technical ability, courage, and leadership.

My family is nervous right now. They aren’t believing that we haven’t been told anything yet, because they are very big culés as well and always hope that after all these years I’ve spent here at the club I would be offered a response, both whether I get to stay or not. And we’re waiting, a bit nervous. But what can we do?” he stated.

This is not the first obstacle that the student majoring in Business Administration has faced at the club. In 2008 he suffered a similar injury in his internal and external cruciate ligament of his knee and his recuperation took about a year.

I don’t feel myself anywhere now,” he responded when asked about whether he feels more in or out of the club. “I will wait and see what they tell me here, if not, I will look for a future away.
Last Monday, Marc participated in the champions parade of the first team, which could be his last celebration with Barça. Still waiting for any news about his future, Marc tweeted this last night: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

Víctor Valdés enters the 500 club

The FC Barcelona keeper reached his 500th official match in the Blaugrana strip, a feat only Xavi, Puyol and Migueli have achieved

The Catalan has won 20 titles and 5 Zamora trophies during his 11 seasons with FC Barcelona
500 matches
- 359 in La Liga
- 104 in the Champions League
- 12 in the Copa del Rey
- 5 in the UEFA Cup
- 10 in the Spanish Super Cup
- 3 in the European Super Cup
- 6 in the Club World Cup
20 titles
- 6 Ligas
- 3 Champions League
- 2 Copas del Rey
- 2 European Super Cups
- 5 Spanish Super Cups
- 2 Club World Cups

Víctor Valdés took his place among a select group of FC Barcelona players this Sunday as he completed his 500th match in the Blaugrana strip. Up until today, only Xavi, Puyol and Migueli had accomplished this feat. The current Barça keeper has featured in 359 La Liga games, 104 Champions League matches, 12 Copa del Rey games, 5 UEFA Cup matches, 10 Spanish Super Cup finals, 3 European Super Cup games and 6 Club World Cup matches. The keeper has won a total of 20 titles in his 500-match odyssey with Barça, among them 6 Liga titles and 3 Champions Leagues.

Since his first team debut, in September of 2002, Valdés has surpassed the most emblematic keepers in FC Barcelona history, like Zubizarreta – who played a total of 410 matches – and Ramallets, who featured in 384 matches in the Blaugrana strip.

Eleven record-setting seasons

FC Barcelona’s current goalkeeper has made it his business to break records throughout his eleven seasons defending Barça’s goal. Valdés holds Barça’s unbeaten record, which stands at 896 minutes without conceding a goal, and he’s won five Zamora trophies (2004/05, 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12).

Valdés has conceded 416 goals in his 500 matches for Barça (average of 0.83 goals per match). His best season was two years ago, in 2010/11, when he only allowed 0.57 goals per match.

Tito Vilanova: “Here you have it!”

The FC Barcelona manager highlighted how difficult it was to win the league title and he urged the fans to "help and encourage" his "fantastic players"

Puyol: "It's been a difficult year, but the most important thing is that Abidal and Tito are with us"
The rain that soaked pitch during the match between FC Barcelona and Valladolid was quickly forgotten when the league champions trotted out onto the pitch after the match. It was time to celebrate the well earned title after a season marked by many difficulties. “It’s a real joy and pleasure to offer you this Liga. It’s been away from Barcelona for a year, but now it’s here once again,” declared Tito Vilanova in his address to the fans.

“I want to thank you for your confidence and for the help you’ve given to us throughout the season, through the good moments and the not so good moments. Without you this would have been much more difficult. I also want to thank my technical staff, who have done a fantastic job.” Lastly, he thanked his players: “Help them and encourage them, they will make you enjoy [football]. Visca el Barça and visca Catalunya.”

Abidal and Tito lift the trophy

Before Vilanova picked up the mic, it was Carles Puyol who addressed the Camp Nou faithful: “we want to thank you for the support you’ve shown us. It’s been a difficult year, but we won La Liga. The most important thing is that Abidal and Tito are here with us. Let’s celebrate this well earned title. We want more next season!”

The captain, who was handed the trophy by Ángel María Villar, president of the RFEF, gave the trophy to Abidal and Vilanova so that they could lift the cup for the first time in front of the fans. A gesture, similar to the one in Wembley in 2011, that won’t be forgotten.

Videos, fireworks and children

The celebrations got underway in earnest after Vilanova and Puyol had thanked the fans for their support. Videos highlighting the best moments of the season were shown on the stadium’s video screens, and were followed by fireworks which lit up the dimmed Camp Nou. In addition to the videos and fireworks, the children of the players took a major role in this evening’s festivities. They joined their fathers on the pitch as the team took their lap of honour. The traditional ‘corro’ in the middle of the pitch around the Club’s 22nd La Liga title capped off Barça’s historic night.

Jordi Roura: “We've had to overcome many difficulties to win this league title”

FC Barcelona's assistant manager explains that he hopes to win "many more league titles" and he admits that "we've very pleased with the work everyone has put in this year"

"Puyol gesture was the right one, it was beautiful", said Roura
“To start, I want to thank the people who came out this Sunday, it was a terrible day, but they came and they endured until the end. Throughout the year the fans have been with us. Thank you for cheering us on.” Those were the first words out of Jordi Roura’s mouth in the post-match press conference after tonight’s match against Valladolid. The assistant manager expressed his joy at winning this year’s league title and he went on to say how eager he is to win more silverware in the future: “this is my first league title as an assistant manager and I hope to win many more, it’s an enormous satisfaction.

“We’ve had to overcome many difficulties, we’re very pleased with the work everyone put in,” said Roura, who went on to analyse the match against Valladolid: “we were coming off of a very long week, but we were able to work well and recover. We had a lot of players to choose from and we wanted to send out the most competitive team. We didn’t do it because we want to equal the 100 point record. If we can do it, it’ll be a good memory; the record excites us.”

“The best start ever to La Liga”

“Throughout the year we’ve had a handful of crucial moments. The first games of the seasons were key thanks to our consistency, we had the best start to La Liga in the history of the competition. Since January people assumed the league was already over but that wasn’t the case, we had to win each week. We could have relaxed, but that didn’t happen, we maintained the necessary consistency to win the title and with an extremely high amount of points,” explained the assistant manager.

“Exceptional situation”

When asked about his brief tenure as head manager of the team, Roura simply said, “it was an exceptional situation, nothing like it had ever occurred. The most difficult thing for me was my personal situation because of what someone who I love was going through. The rest is done through professionalism.” He then went on to talk about Tito Vilanova’s address to the fans: “I really liked it, it was extraordinary. He wanted to thank this group of players for their great season.”

Alba: “We want to win 100 points

Alba: “We want to win 100 points”

FC Barcelona player Jordi Alba, speaking during the presentation ceremony of his youth training campus, said that despite winning the main objective, the La Liga title, the team still wants to do something important this spring. “We have three games left and we’ll try to win them. We want to equal Madrid’s record and win 100 points,” he declared. Asked about plans for next season and his opinion about upcoming signings, Alba noted that “the coaching staff and the board of directors will strengthen the team where they see fit. I think the team is great, we have a bright future, and I hope we win more titles next season.” When asked specifically about the possibility of Neymar joining the blaugrana, he said, “I don’t know if he’ll come or not. He’s a great player and he’s proving that he’s a different kind of footballer.”

Speaking about the impact of Leo Messi, Jordi praised his teammate, saying that “he’s the number one player, perhaps the best in the history of the sport. On many occasions we depend on him, but we also have other players that are very good.”
“Signing for Barça was the best thing that could have happened,” underlined Alba. He also talked about Tito and Abidal’s return to the team: “we went through some difficult moments, but in the end we were able to lift an important title.”

He also thanked the fans who took part in the champions parade through the streets of Barcelona. He said, “it was a beautiful experience. I had experienced something similar in Madrid when we won the European Cup, but never at the club level. It was phenomenal.”

Puyol, Piqué, Cesc, Xavi and Bartra visit FIFPro's new headquarters in the Netherlands

Five FC Barcelona players attended the inauguration of FIFPro's new headquarters in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands
Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Cesc Fàbregas, Xavi Hernández and Marc Bartra visited the FIFPro headquarters this Wednesday in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands, to show their support to the players’ football associations represented by the organisation.

The FC Barcelona players attended a lecture given by former international referee Hugh Dallas, and they attended a conference on the ‘eye in the sky’ camera. Members of the 50 players’ associations and the Barça players then sat down for a brief Q&A session.

“The fact that Cesc, Xavi, Piqué, Puyol and Bartra visited us in person shows the respect and solidarity that the Barça players have for their fellow footballers and players’ unions from around the world,” said the secretary general of FIFPro, Theo van Seggelen.

Song, Messi is the best player in the world

The Cameroonian sits down with Sky Sports to talk about his first season with FC Barcelona

The player went on to admit that Tito Vilanova and Éric Abidal – both of whom had prologued absences from the team due to illness – gave a boost to the team when they made their return: “When Tito came back we were very happy because we were missing something that wasn’t here and it’s the same with Éric [Abidal]. They both have great character because they’re fighting. When you see them fighting it gives you more power to try to help and give your best on the pitch ...  We are more comfortable now and we try to give our best for him [Tito] to make him happy as well because we’ve missed him for a long time.”

Leo Messi, the best player in the world

When asked what it’s like to share the dressing room with Leo Messi, Song said, “I think Leo is special. You can’t compare ... he’s the best player in the world.” He added: “when he was born I think God came and put something in his bed and said ‘go and you be unique in the world.’ I think that’s happened! I’m very proud that I am able to play with him.”

That’s Messi the player, what's he like as a person, probed the journalist. “He’s a fantastic guy, just like all the squad. He’s simple, he jokes around all the time, and he tries to help.” He added: “in the Barcelona dressing room, honestly, I don’t want to say this just because I play for Barcelona, when you see this player - the best champion - his character is just fantastic.”

Xavi: “This generation of players can win more titles”

Xavi: “This generation of players can win more titles”

The Catalan midfielder says that he's "proud and pleased" with his seven La Liga titles, but he adds: "I didn't win the titles, they were won by Barça"

"I'm in favour of making few changes. It seems as though we have to change everything, but that's not the case," explains Xavi
Xavi Hernández spoke to the press this afternoon at the Ciutat Esportiva ahead of the team’s first training session of the week. Barça’s second captain talked about the atmosphere surrounding the Club in the days following the team’s successful bid to reclaim the league title and his personal record of seven La Liga titles. “I’m proud and pleased that I’ve won seven Ligas. For me they are all important. This generation of players makes me very proud and it’s not as if I won them all, the league titles; Barça won them,” said the Catalan player, who declared that “this generation can win more titles.”

“I couldn’t have imagined more titles”

“As a Culé, I have a tendency to be more pessimistic. I could not have imagined winning so many titles. Our philosophy has yielded its rewards and I hope it continues to do so,” said Xavi. He added: “we’ve set the bar very high and now it seems as though what we do falls short [of that mark]. We are competitive, we have to evaluate what we’ve done. It’s not easy to win a title every season.

“We weren’t at our best in the crucial moments of the season. In decisive moments, like in the semi-finals of the Cup, we didn’t know how to kill off the tie against Real Madrid,” mused the Blaugrana captain.

Few changes

Xavi went on to say that he doesn’t look favourably on the idea of gutting the team next season. “I’m in favour of making few changes. It seems as though we’re in a terrible situation and that we must change the whole team. But we’re going through a good moment,” said the midfielder, who added that “I hope my level of play remains high in the next three years I have on my contract.”

Good atmosphere

“We were all enjoying the festive atmosphere of the champions parade. We’re proud that we won La Liga and that we got to share that with the fans ... that’s what we’ll remember. Our intention is to show our fans a good time,” concluded the Barça captain.

Player Reactions: Winning La Liga

Player Reactions: Winning La Liga

Player Reactions: Winning La Liga

After yesterday’s uninspired victory over Atlético Madrid, several FC Barcelona players spoke to the press about the much larger victory of regaining the Liga championship.
While some critics have tried to downplay Barça’s league triumph as merely an afterthought papering over their more mediocre showings in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, the ever outspoken Dani Alves defended the importance of the team’s success in the league: “If it were so easy to win La Liga, we wouldn’t have lost it last year.” Fellow defender and equally vocal player Gerard Piqué echoed the Brazilian’s sentiments: “We’ve had an exceptional league campaign; 10 out of 10. The season, which was nearly perfect for us, saw us get very close to the Cup and Champions League finals. The team put in a brutal effort to get there.” While “nearly perfect” may seem overly optimistic, Piqué emphasized the importance of celebration to ease the burden of what has been an incredibly taxing year for players, staff, and fans alike, saying, “I’m eager to celebrate this title. It’s been a difficult year, and now we have to celebrate … we need to enjoy this.”

Alexis Sánchez and Cesc Fàbregas, two players who have had a particularly difficult time both on the field and with criticism from fans and media, were both particularly proud to celebrate their first Liga title. Alexis, goalscorer and Man of the Match against Atlètico, showed an important balance of self-criticism and pride in his comments: “I finished strong[ly]. The most important thing is how things end, not how they start. Now our objective is to win the games we have left this season.” Cesc was equally mature in his celebrations of his first major club trophy: I’m very proud, it’s a dream for me … I’ve participated a lot in La Liga and that pleases me, I’ve played a lot of matches. I have to improve, I need to be self-critical once the season ends, but I’m young and I can do it.” Despite being vilified by portions of the Barcelona fanbase, these two players have perhaps represented the team better than anyone in the latter half of this season; they have persevered through enormous obstacles and critical losses of confidence to succeed, and they deserve unreserved celebrations. But also like the team, they will need to take a long self-critical look at themselves this summer and work hard to improve by next fall.

The 22 moments that define FC Barcelona's 22nd league title

The 22 moments that define FC Barcelona's 22nd league title

The road to the 22nd league title brought us many unforgettable moments
1. Victorious start to the season (FCB 5 - 1 R. Sociedad): The team started off the season with a bang at the Camp Nou. Carles Puyol scored the first goal for the Blaugrana.

2. Villa makes his return (FCB 5 - 1 R. Sociedad): El Guaje featured in an official match for Barça after fully recovering from the serious injury he picked up in the Club World Cup in December of 2012. He also scored against Real Sociedad.

3. Marvelous strike from Adriano (FCB 1 - 0 Valencia): Barça defeated Valencia thanks to a wonder strike from the Brazilian defender.

4. Xavi earns the points for the Blaugrana against Granada (FCB 2 - 0 Granada): The midfield maestro sent the ball to the back of the net in the dying minutes of the match to give Barça the lead, in added time Borja scored an own goal to seal the win.

5. Miraculous comeback (Sevilla 2 - 3 FCB): This was quite possibly the most difficult win for Barça in La Liga this year. Two goals from Cesc and another from Villa (in added time) gave Barça the win after they trailed Sevilla by 2-0 for most of the game.

6. Electric Clásico (FCB 2 - 2 R. Madrid): The Blaugrana came into the match without their starting centre backs. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, both of whom scored braces, were the goal scorers.

7. Crazy match at the Riazor (Deportivo 4 - 5 FCB): The match with the most goals in La Liga this season for Barça was at the Riazor. The Blaugrana took a 0-3 lead but Depor fought back. Messi’s hat trick was key in securing the points.

8. La Masia XI (Levante 0 - 4 FCB): For the first time in recent history, Barça played with 11 youth academy graduates: Valdés, Montoya, Piqué, Puyol, Alba, Xavi, Busquets, Cesc, Pedro, Messi and Iniesta.

9. Best start to the season in the history of the competition (FCB 5 - 1 Athletic Club): A phenomenal match against the Basque side saw Barça claim the record for the best ever start to a league campaign: 13 victories and 1 draw in the opening 14 matches of the season.

10. Messi bests Müller (Betis 1 - 2 FCB): Two goals from Messi at the Benito Villamarín took the Argentine’s goalscoring tally in a calendar year past Müller’s all-time record.

11. Authoritarian leaders (FCB 4 - 1 Atlético Madrid): The Blaugrana fired for four goals against their closest pursuer in the table, which increased Barça’s lead to 9 points. Falcao scored the opener.

12. ‘Seny, pit y collons’ (Valladolid 1 - 3 FCB): The Barça players wore t-shirts with this slogan after news broke of Tito Vilanova’s parotid gland pathology.

13. Four goals in 28 minutes in the Catalan derby (FCB 4 - 0 Espanyol): The Blaugrana sealed the win in under 30 minutes on January 6 of this year against city rivals Espanyol.

14. 55 of 57 possible points. Legendary first half of the season (Málaga 1 - 3 FCB): An excellent match at La Rosaleda closes out a nearly perfect first half of the season: 18 victories and one draw.

15. Four star Messi (FCB 5 - 1 Osasuna): Leo Messi fired for four goals against Osasuna at the Camp Nou.

16. First defeat of in La Liga (R. Sociedad 3 - 2 FCB): On week 20 of La Liga, the first match of the second half of the season, Barça were handed their first defeat of the tournament. Real Sociedad fought back from a two-goal deficit to take all the points at Anoeta.

17. Morning glory (FCB 6 - 1 Getafe): Barça’s first Sunday morning match of the season ended in a spectacular six-goal rout.

18. Something special, indeed (Celta 2 - 2 FCB): At Balaídos, Leo Messi became the first player in the history of Spanish football to consecutively score against every top-flight team.

19. Tito Vilanova returns to the Camp Nou  (FCB 5 - 0 Mallorca): The head manager took control of his team in La Liga after receiving treatment in New York City.

20. Abidal returns (FCB 5 - Mallorca): One year and two months after his liver transplant surgery, Abidal made his miraculous return to professional football: he was subbed in for Gerard Piqué.

21. Messi’s slalom at the San Mamés (Athletic Club 2 - 2 FCB): Barça bid farewell to the San Mamés with a bittersweet draw. The Argentine scored one of the best goals of the year moments after he was subbed into the match.

22. Champions’ fightback (FCB 4 - 2 Betis): The Blaugrana practically secure the league title with the victory over Betis on week 34 of the competition.

Vilanova: This league means a lot

Vilanova: This league means a lot

Vilanova: This league means a lot

FC Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova addressed the press on Saturday ahead of this weekend’s Liga match in Madrid against third placed Atlético. Vilanova spent most of his time validating the squad’s imminent Liga title: “This league means a lot. We’ll have beaten the best Madrid ever, the one that got 100 points. I know [Atletico] will want to beat us. It’s always an added motivation to be playing Barça. Atlético have the cup final to think about, but they have a big enough squad to be able to cope well enough with this match too. They’ve only let in ten goals at home and are having an excellent season.”
The other team from the capitol, Real Madrid, will be in Catalunya on Saturday for a match against Barcelona’s cross-town rivals Espanyol. When asked about the match Vilanova replied: “The only thing I’m thinking about is winning our match. I can’t be worrying about what might happen on Saturday. People get the feeling that we already won the league some time ago, but Real Madrid have had an incredible second half to the season and if we had relaxed, they’d have caught up with us.”

One emerging sidelight in the final stretch of the season is about whether or not Leo Messi can once again surpass 50 Liga goals. When asked about this potential record, Vilanova was clear about the squad’s priorities: “The aim this Sunday is not for Messi to get to 50 goals, it’s to win the league. But if he can do that as well, so much the better.

Champions!

Champions!

Barça secure their 22nd league title, their fourth in five years

The Blaugrana broke records on their way to the title, like setting the best ever start to a league campaign
‘Aquest any, també!’ (This year, too!). Barça are mathematically champions of La Liga. Madrid’s draw against Málaga means that the Blaugrana have won the title without even playing. Barça will visit the Vicente Calderón on Sunday as La Liga champions.

This is the Club’s 22nd league title and the fourth in five years. This year’s victory highlight’s Barça’s dominance in Spanish football. The triumphant era started Pep Guardiola has been carried on by Tito Vilanova. The style deeply rooted in ball possession and offensive play has once again carried the Blaugrana to victory.

Tito and Abi’s league

This isn’t just another league title, the Club’s 22nd Liga holds special meaning. The team had to overcome two extremely difficult setbacks. The illnesses of Tito Vilanova and Éric Abidal left the team without a head manager and one of the best defenders on the roster for part of the season. The players and coaching staff, led by Roura and Altimira, met the challenge with hard work and an unflinching commitment to the Club. Each and every one of them had to step up to secure the league title, a league that was always under Blaugrana control, from the first to the last week of the competition.

Impeccable trajectory

Just like in seasons past, Barça broke records that seemed to be out of reach. The most notable of which was the team’s sensational first half of the season, when they won 55 of 57 possible points. It was the best ever start to a league campaign in Spanish football history, and it saw the Blaugrana 10 points clear at the top in December.

No brakes

With four games left on the schedule, the team still has a handful of challenges yet . So far they’ve won 88 points and if they win the rest of their games, they will equal the best ever point haul in La Liga. In addition, they’ve scored 105 goals, a record breaking tally for any team with four games left to play this season. Leo Messi has netted 46 goals and he’s the front runner to win the Pichichi award. Last year he scored 50 goals. This is FC Barcelona’s era, an era marked by a unique style of play. Long live the champions!

Thiago: “We’ve been fighting for this all season”

Thiago: “We’ve been fighting for this all season”

Thiago: “We’ve been fighting for this all season”

Thiago Alcântara gave a press conference after Thursday’s training session to stress the importance of the league title, and how much FC Barcelona wants it.
“We’ve been fighting for this all season. Last year we lost the title and we want it back. It’s a lovely title. Sometimes you get so used to winning it’s as if you don’t value the title, but I can tell you that here in the squad we know how hard it has been to face up to and win so many games.”

Although Barça can clinch the La Liga title a day before facing Atlético Madrid on Sunday at the Vicente Calderón, Thiago insists that Blaugrana’s priority is to win even if Real Madrid loses to Espanyol on Saturday.

“The Calderón is never an easy place to go to and win. Atlético Madrid are in next year’s Champions League and they are through to the Cup final. There’s still plenty of time for them to focus on that final and I am sure they will give us a very tough game.”
Regarding his form this season, he said that he was satisfied with his contribution to the team, even though his injuries at the start of the campaign hindered his progress. He feels that he is finishing the season in good condition. He hopes to give more to the team and get more time on the pitch.
He also spoke highly of his brother Rafinha, who plays with Barça B, and said that he has enough quality to succeed and “bring great things to the team.”

Iniesta’s father responds to Mourinho

Iniesta’s father responds to Mourinho

Iniesta’s father responds to Mourinho
José Antonio Iniesta, the father of FC Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta, hit back at Real Madrid coach José Mourinho’s comments on his son, pointing out that the Portuguese manager “doesn’t know respect and shame.” Earlier in the week, Iniesta junior had spoken in favor of beleaguered Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas to which Mourinho later responded that the Barcelona player should mind his own business.

The Illusionista’s father this Thursday denied that his his son had “attacked” the manager. “Iniesta doesn’t mention Mourinho for any reason. He spoke about Casillas because he has affinity towards him,” he recalled before declaring that ”Mourinho is always inviting a brawl. Madridismo has supported him [Mourinho] but bit by bit you will find out who he really is,” said the father of ‘Don Andrés’.
José Antonio also talked about Casillas’ current situation and considered that if this “had happened in England or Germany, Mourinho wouldn’t be here for very long. What he is doing to a person with such human qualities like Iker, an institution in Spanish football and in Real Madrid, has no precedent.”

The player’s father also commented diplomatically on his son’s experience with the Ballon d’Or: “My son says that he won his Balón de Oro a long time ago through his humility and giving us great satisfaction [as fans and admirers]. The Ballon d’Or is given but this is gifted.”
The player’s father also addressed concerns about his son’s footballing future. “He wishes to end his career in Barcelona, but football has become so competitive that in the moment your level drops it will be the moment when you have to leave Barca,” he explained, leaving the doors open for future adventures.

MESSI: I AM NOT A SELFISH PLAYER

MESSI: I AM NOT A SELFISH PLAYER

Lionel Messi's greatness on the pitch is unquestionable. Up close, however, this Twenty First Century football genius is approachable, shy and warm, writes Marca,Spain's number one sports paper.

"I have memories from when I was very small, three or four years old, playing in a neighbourhood team", he begins.

Q-Was it there, in your neighbourhood, that you learnt to avoid getting kicked?

I've had the same style and the same way of playing since I was small. The truth is that, then, I didn't think about the kicks I was getting.

Q-Does starting out at Barcelona bring back good memories or unpleasant ones?

Both. On the one hand, happy ones; about how it was living in Barcelona where everything was new to me. On the other, it was hard because I was far away from my family and friends. Also, I couldn't play at the start because I was injured and also had problems with my papers. It was tough at the beginning.

Q-Which player was your role model?

I've always admired Aimar. He came from River and I liked the way he played. I always followed him.
Q-Did you get picked on because you were small?

I've never had any problems about my height. I was always the smallest at school and in football.

Q-You didn't have starter status until you trained at the academy under Tito. Did you think about giving it all up?

No, never. I always thought about keeping going with training and working towards my fulfilling my dreams. I was lucky that, when Tito arrived, I started to play.

Q-In what ways has Tito changed?

He's the same person that coached us in the youth team. I was young then and I don't remember much but he's still the same way and he treated us the same as he does now.

Q-Did you play as a false '9' then?

There was a different system. We played with a striker and I was positioned behind him, with another two players out wide on the wings. I was already an attacking midfielder. You can't say that the false striker was created there; it was another way of playing.

Q-You take the lead in making assists now, were you a selfish player before?

I've never considered myself as a selfish player although there have been people who have thought so.

Q-Are you taking the role of leader with Guardiola having left?

I feel the same as I did in other years. Everyone knows their role and this squad doesn't need a leader with the kind of people there are in it.

Q-You give the feeling that you play for the glory, for something greater, competing with Pelé and Maradona every day.

I try to improve every day. If, with that, people compare me to those two players who were so great and are still considered to be today, that's something amazing and really nice.

Q-And what if your son, Thiago, becomes a Rosario Central or River supporter?

I don't think that'll happen.

Q-Would you advise him to be a footballer?

He should be what he wants to be. When he grows up he'll work out what he wants and whatever he chooses will be fine with me, with his Mum and with everyone.

Busquets: “Barça fans are proud of this team”

Busquets: “Barça fans are proud of this team”

Busquets: “Barça fans are proud of this team”

FC Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets spoke at a press conference on Wednesday. He began by stating that “we’re ready to win the match on Sunday, but if [the league title] comes before then, it’ll be just as important. Winning a title is special and the league even more so.” The La Liga title, however, won’t be Barça’s just yet. Real Madrid’s 6-2 victory over Málaga at the Santiago Bernabéu means Barça will have to wait to celebrate the title. Sergio underlined the importance of the title, saying that “the league is the tournament of regularity and the most important. What’s more, it would be the fourth league title in five years and that would be spectacular.”
Sergio Busquets also spoke about what the La Liga title will mean for culés. “All the Barça fans are proud of this team. They know how important this team is and they want us to win the league.” He also noted that without a doubt, a league championship has to be celebrated with a cavalcade through the city and a party at the stadium. “We want to do this and more now that the weeks are so long. It’s the best thing to do as we deserve it and so do all the fans.”
Busquets explained that his injury began near the end of January. “I’ve improved since I started the treatment. It’s a very complicated injury because some days are better than others. You have to take it slowly and hope that you’re on the right track. I know it won’t go away overnight.” However, he ruled out having an operation that would cancel his Confederation Cup plans. “I’m feeling better now,” he assured.
Asked about his future with the Barça, he insisted: “I see myself here in the future and in the present. I’ve no intention of moving from here. I see myself with Barça.” He added that long-serving players like Xavi, Puyol and Valdés “are an example for me”.
Sergio also spoke about the rumours that Carles Puyol could leave the blaugrana side at the end of the season. “He’s already denied these rumours. We’re all delighted with Puyol. Let’s hope he can carry on for many more years. He’s looking good to me and he’s on the mend. He’s got a difficult injury but he’s keen to get better as soon as possible. You always have to put a brake on him because he wants to be with the team and get better as soon as possible. Right now I can’t imagine Barça without Puyol and Valdés, but the day will come. The years go by and everything moves on.”

The ex-FC Barcelona player received a gift President Sandro Rosell for his service to the team
José Edmílson was the guest of honour in the Camp Nou’s presidential box during the game between FC Barcelona and Betis this evening. The ex-Barça player, who featured for the team from 2004 through 2008, received a tribute of gratitude from the Club for his service to the team. President Sandro Rosell awarded a framed picture of the triumphant Barça side that won the Champions League in 2006 in Paris to the Brazilian.

The ex-defender, who was visibly touched by the gift, spoke to Barça TV after the match: “this gift is very touching, I spent four years here and I experienced both good and bad times. But I’m very pleased that I got to play for Barça. Football and titles are forgotten but friends and people stay in your life. I’m very pleased with the tribute.”

The FC Barcelona centre back declares that today's victory over Betis was crucial in the race to win the league title

The FC Barcelona centre back, Gerard Piqué, said that today’s victory over Real Betis “was extremely important. This match almost guarantees us the league title. It was vital.”

Piqué went on to say that victory over Betis was borne out of team play, above anything else: “we played a great match, in the first half we were unlucky: they had two chances and they scored two goals. In the second half we played the same brand of football and we managed to win. Football gave us what we deserved.”

Thankful for Vilanova

When asked about Leo Messi’s performance, Piqué was clear: “we know that he’s the best player in the world, and we hope he continues to be for many years to come. He knows to be at the right place at the right time.”

In relation to his declarations after the Champions League semi-final and the subsequent comments by Tito Vilanova, he said, “I hold Tito in the highest regard, he was coaching me when I was 15 years old. I don’t feel bad about what was said yesterday. He is the manager and he has every right to say what he wants. I said that we needed to improve, and I was talking about myself on a personal level. We all need to improve next season.”

Here are the statements made by some of the Barça players after the match:

Alves:

“There is no such thing as the past in football, we have to live in the moment.”

“The players and the fans have to celebrate the title. We’re competing against a great team, and we’ve managed to beat them, we need to be grateful for this group of players ... they have dazzled the world with their football.”

“I don’t think we need to change the team too much. If the Club believes it necessary to bring in new players, we would be in agreement with that decision.”

Iniesta:

“God willing we’ll be champions soon. There aren’t words to describe the value of a title like this.”

“If the team suffers, the fans do as well, and vice versa. When we win titles it isn’t just for us, it’s also for the fans.”

“There is a dependency on Messi because he’s a fundamental player, but the whole team is also important. Having him with us is always a positive thing.”

“When the players talk about needed changed, we are referring to things that would change the team for the better. Changes that are designed to help us. I’m sure the core of the team is capable of competing and winning. We shouldn’t go crazy with the changed next year.”

“It would be a good season if we win the league title. We’ll try to win it again next season.”

Alexis:

“Leo motivates us. And he’s motivated by us, too.”

“Betis are a great team. It was a pleasure to play against them.”

“We want to be champions. We really wanted to win today. We need to focus on our next match.”
